I guess that is way the old expression goes, ‘Time flies when you’re having fun.’  Yesterday, I picked up a subbing job at Hight Elementary School where I filled in for the Learning Center Teacher.  Overall, it was a fun gig, watching students come in and out, and really getting to connect and spend some one on one time teaching math concepts.  The day started with an early morning swim, and time is tight when I return home before I have to head out to pool, so when Melissa and I returned home in the evening, I was ready to call it a night, however, we decided to head out for a jog around sunset.  We are still learning the neighborhood streets, and I guess the best way to learn is to simply go out, and get turned around.  In my mind, we were simply going to make a big rectangle, and when we turned on a street, that I knew the name of since the fitness club is on it, I thought it would take us through to the main street, which we live off of.  Once we ran a good distance down the street, we noticed a big yellow arrow and the street changed names as it took a right.  In front of us was a natural watershed habitat that looked like it may have had a trail, but with the sun set at this point, we followed the street and wound into a residential neighborhood.  Within a few minutes, we realized that the street that I thought would go through, indeed ended and we were now on another street that seemed to turn into more rights and lefts, not really knowing where it would spit us out.   Decisions, decisions…. so we turned back and then decided to head into the dark forested trail area… mind you, I considered grabbing my headlamp on the way out, but thought we would be out for 20 minutes or so, this decision I was now regretting.

Well, low and behold, the trail was unnavigable in the dark and from what we could see, there was a small creek that passed through, that we weren’t into fording, so retrace our steps we did.  In the end we made our way home, a little longer than expecting, but a mini-nightime adventure non-the-less.

Today, was the usual fellas, making the usual appearance on the Wednesday morning 6 am ride.  It has really been fun watching the sun rise earlier and earlier all summer, and now watching the sun rise later and later, thus having to use lights and wear warmer clothes.  The bikeway is being paved, so there was a mile or so section that looked like it had been paved yesterday.  I had just cleaned the bike and was worried about tar gumming things up, but it seemed to dry quickly since it wasn’t sticking to the tires.

I returned home promptly at 7 and Melissa was about to head out on a jog, since she headed to Berkeley today with her bike, and noticed last week that her running stuff took up a good percentage of her personal items (this being in addition to her cumbersome ridiculously ginormous books) in her two panniers, so I went out for a 5 k run around the neighborhood.

Protein shake and some toast for breakfast and we headed to Davis.  In Davis, I took some time to stand over some time trial bicycles.  This summer I sold my Look and built up an Orbea with some components I had from a bicycle that I inherited from my college roommate.  Therefore, I have been saving the funds for a bike specific to racing triathlon for next years Ironman Lake Tahoe.  Unfortunately, the shop I went in had only high end bikes, that were out of my budget, but I did manage to get some good information and since ordered a 2011 closeout Cervelo P1, that should arrive next week while we are in Hawaii.  So that is probably the biggest news of the day, but following spending some time in the bike shop, Melissa and I went out to lunch at Plutos.  Here, we met up with my friend Eliza from UC Santa Cruz.  Eliza was also a psychology major and we took one of the most famous classes offered at Santa Cruz with Professor Craig Haney, Psychology and Law… one of the most powerful courses I have taken to date.

Eliza has maintained her bubbly personality and great sense of humor as she is in the midst of her third year at UC Davis Law School.  We enjoyed tasty salads before we had to depart to get Melissa to her chiropractic appointment.  I then said my goodbye before she set out for her weekly stay in the Bay area.  Tonight she is leading a chemistry lab, the big assignment for the semester, and she, with her gung-ho personality, volunteered to be the first to take on the project… best of luck!

Dinner of chicken breast, pasta, and salad, before I call it an evening.  Live adventurously, Love generously, and laugh often.
